Let's just face it - I was never planning on making Thanksgiving dinner this year. With only 6 short days until my due date, I figured it was a good effort to arrange to eat at the Hard Rock Cafe in Amsterdam - one of the only places where a "traditional" Thanksgiving meal is served around here...
Obviously, arranging a Thanksgiving feast on my own is a huge ordeal. Turkey is scarce around here - it's just not something people eat on the regular. I think it would be comparable to Duck in the states...sure you can find it at fancy restaurants and maybe if you really searched far and wide you could find one to roast on your own - but it would pretty expensive and probably not worth the effort. So maybe you noticed that traditional was in quotes up there...that's because the food didn't taste quite right. The turkey tasted more like thick deli meat, the potatoes were far from creamy, and the gravy was done just how the Dutch like it - thin and broth-like. It's true, none of us were blown away by the meal, but we still went around and listed things we were thankful for and we tried to make it feel as Thanksgivingish as possible. Here are a couple shots of our fun group - The Aitkens and The Andersons! We live just down the street from each other, our kids go to school together, we all go to church together, and we love hanging out and celebrating holidays together.
Till next year when I may or may not make more of an effort on the feast.
