So here's how it all went down, since you're dying to know. We drove to Montenegro to see the Bay of Kotor. We got to the border checkpoint, showed this mean dude our papers (for the car), and he straight up turned us away - no exceptions. We called the rental company, those jerks, they're the ones who left the papers out of the car in the first place. They referred us to a small map in the glove compartment showing that we were roaming all around Eastern Europe, which is apparently considered a risky place to drive. The map was color coded, and we were in the DO NOT DRIVE countries...we could not dispute it. So we called the lease company, those jerks, they're the ones who arranged the car rental. They said they would take care of it. Worse case scenario, we might not be able to leave Croatia when we cross into Hungary. That was great to hear - really soothing and comforting and such. They said they would try to email us copies of the correct papers and maybe the border guy would accept that. But did we wait for that email? NO. Why? Because we have lived here long enough to know that the American way of doing business is fast, efficient, and above all - the customer is always right. And Europeans do NOT do business the American way. Maybe we would get the email in several hours, maybe we would get it the next day, or maybe we would never get it at all. Even if we did receive that email within minutes, we knew better. We KNEW that border guy would NOT accept a digital copy of our papers. In the commonly spoken words of the Dutch (each and every time they are denying you some type of service) NOT POSSIBLE.
So we cut our losses. We took pictures by the sign and did a 180.
Peace out - Montenegro. I don't think you could handle the Anderson Clan anyway.
